Prehospital Whole Blood Program

What is Bensalem Rescue Squad's prehospital whole blood program?

Beginning September 30, 2026, specially trained and credentialed Bensalem Rescue Squad paramedics became authorized to give whole blood to eligible patients before they reach the hospital.

The program was developed in partnership with the blood banks at Trinity Health Mid-Atlantic, St. Mary Medical Center, and Jefferson Health, Jefferson Torresdale Hospital. Its purpose is to begin replacing blood as early as possible in patients with life-threatening bleeding and hemorrhagic shock.

Bensalem Rescue Squad is part of a very small group of advanced EMS systems nationwide with this capability. Current estimates suggest that only approximately 2% of ground EMS agencies responding to 9-1-1 calls in the United States carry blood products for prehospital transfusion.

Research suggests that earlier blood transfusion may improve outcomes for selected patients. However, the exact benefit depends on the cause and severity of the bleeding, how quickly treatment begins, transport time, and the other medical care provided.
